Veterans Day Message

Today, November 11, 2017, the president of the United States disrespected our intelligence community while in a foreign country, shouted out support for Putin and expressed worry with how unhappy Putin is with our investigation of Russia.

Really.    I kid you not.    That happened today.

Not the Veterans Day message we usually get but one that shows the devastation happening in our government.

Enough is enough. It was enough a year ago. We are better than this. I know Americans will stand up for Curry’s message every day of the week and it’s time we come together to vocalize our common beliefs. The following link is from Stephen Curry. It’s spot on.

Christmas in April

I’m listening to Christmas music. I know, it’s April, but I lost all of my iTunes music last November in a crazy action meant to keep my old computer working just a little bit longer. I missed hearing all those happy songs of peace on earth and I really need that right now. In the ensuing months since last autumn, I have learned a great deal about iTunes, computers, googling answers and relying on the kindness of strangers.

Isn’t that how life works? We make mistakes. We do something stupid. We keep making more stupid mistakes and then finally admit our errant ways, hoping someone can dig us out of the hole. We need to do this today more than ever before in my lifetime. We’ve dug quite a hole here.

For example, one mistake (believing media was solid), led to another mistake (if media is corrupt, conspiracy theories must be true), to another mistake (believing an outsider would improve this country), which leads to our current mistake – hiding – because we’re so embarrassed we were taken in by Facebook and Russians, we’re hoping it will all magically get better…. but 8,000 iTunes songs are gone. Vanished. No denying it.

I know, it’s hard. You feel stupid. How could you have sent all those songs to the trash just because you believed they were carefully backed up on your external hard drive? “Warning: This action cannot be undone.” Click. Drag. It all seemed to make sense at the time.

Ok, time to peek open one eye and admit to the mistake. There is no shame in that. In fact, it requires a great deal of courage.

Next, do some research. What exactly do you agree with in this administration? What do you oppose? How would you like your representatives to move forward from here? What do you think will really make the gridlock stop? And then google how to get your iTunes from your external hard drive to your new computer. Smart strangers know some good stuff.

When you have some answers, take some actions. And before you know it, Christmas songs, Rachmaninoff, Justin Timberlake, and Reba McIntyre will be humming away in your happy ears.

You are not a pathetic loser if you don’t pass along that meme

No, you don’t have a cold, cruel heart if you don’t repost the poor, downtrodden puppy, the wounded veteran, the guy with fifteen months sobriety, or the kid whose class wants to know how far and fast a meme can travel the world. Many of the memes now are ways for those with malicious intent to worm their way into your computer. Feel free to pass them by without a care in the world. Instead of passing along a meme, find a puppy to rescue, find a veteran to thank, support someone trying to clean up their life or volunteer in a school.

Besides, passing along memes, while sometimes entertaining, will not save the world or even make the world a better place. If fact, many memes are mean and derogatory, judgmental and divisive. We have to stop the click and share of such destructive material. I know many folks get a hit out of it, a satisfying jolt of adrenaline and righteousness. If you are one of those folks, the best thing may be cold turkey.

It takes a clear eye to see how people on either side of the spectrum throw enough mud to keep us angry into the next century. I, for one, would like to wrap this up before then. This fight for democracy will not be won by putting others down.

I listened to some friends the other night, staunch liberal friends, talking just like my staunch conservative friends, the topics might be different but the sentiments were the same. I want to control my world and that means I have to control yours as well. If I don’t understand where you are coming from, then you must be wrong. It’s my way or the highway.

This is not going to get us off the pendulum swing and out of the hatred that has gripped this country. It’s time to ask questions. Time to find out why other people want what they want. Down deep, it’s likely the same as you want –

  • To protect family, keep them safe and give them the best in life
  • To be able to do as I want in my own life and not worry you will try to make me live your values and morals.
  • To have clean water, air and good food to eat
  • To be able to afford what I need and want
  • To love this planet and love one another

Soften your heart. Listen with your heart. Talk from the heart.

Learn something.  Be curious. Be creative. Go!

We Need American Basics

This is what I am talking about. It’s not about a Republican or Democratic agenda, of course there are good points and ideas on both sides. We can’t even get to that until we solve this problem. What I’m talking about is HOW this administration is going about it’s business. We must have fair and transparent government which means we need journalism, we need congressional investigations into Russia and to know the financial ties the administration has that may conflict with Americans best interest. Thank you John McCain for speaking up, please continue, there is more to be said and done. Get others on board. Please stand up for what is right.

What about Unions?

Worker Wednesday

Unions have been taking a beating in recent years. Corruption in some has tainted all. They are seen as unruly and too powerful, pushing an agenda that damages business. As with all things, some of this is true, most of this is not.

Unions protect laborers from greedy business practices, they provide needed controls for health and safety and ensure fair treatment. If ever, we need unions to function now. We have seen many corporations use and abuse their employees. You have likely seen such practices as refusing to hire full time employees to avoid paying benefits, refusing to pay a living wage, exorbitant compensation to CEO’s while full time employees struggle to make ends meet.

Make sure you are getting good information about unions. Check out the unions in your community. Who is doing a good job? How can you be supportive of them? Which need to be called out for poor practices? This doesn’t mean you throw out the whole union, fix it, make it useful and honest.

Which party is most patriotic?

When you think of patriotism, which party comes to mind? For many it’s the Republican Party. Why is that? It’s because the Republicans made an effort to claim patriotism and it’s definition. Patriotism has come to mean wearing an American flag lapel pin, fighting for ones country in the military and loyalty to country by never criticizing, no matter what.

This is not the definition of patriotism.

Patriotism is love and devotion to ones country. How this is expressed is as varied as there are people on the planet. In the USA we have many rights and responsibilities as citizens to hold our country to high standards – that is patriotism – a love so deep, devotion so constant that no one will bring down what we value.

Consider unions and how they have risen and fallen in the last 150 years. Hard fought rights by many that were beaten, jailed and killed to improve the lives of all American workers. Corruption infiltrated unions causing a wedge between worker and union which created a gap where business owners could take advantage and weaken union strongholds.

Citizens coming together to demand fair treatment is an inalienable American right and a patriotic stand. No one wants to return to the work conditions before unions and no one wants corrupt unions to unfairly treat businesses. The solution is in transparency and balance.

How will you express your patriotism? Inform your legislative representatives of your values and standards for this country. Support your local unions, teacher unions and other workers that are treated unfairly. Get to know the issues, be informed and share your opinion. Vote. Be informed about your local school district, town, county and state issues. Keeping America great is about maintaining our gains and fighting for our country.

You agree with me, right?

The restaurant was closed where my friend and I were going to meet for breakfast. I called her to create a new plan, watching for her to come from my left. As we talked she said she would turn around. I said but you’re not even here yet. She replied, yes I am, I am on your right.

I was looking for her to come from the scenic route to my left. She chose to come down the main highway on my right. I would take the back roads every time. I love the countryside, get easily tired of highway driving, and would always opt for trees, rivers and cows.

It’s easy to assume everyone thinks like me and shocking at times to find out “they” don’t. It’s time to let go of the idea that politics and religion are taboo topics. This came into being when it was decided that people became too angry and out of control to have a civil conversation.

Civil conversation is what will save this country.

Begin to reach out to those that voted other than you did this year. Not to convince them of your point of view, but to understand their point of view. We need to find common ground. We need to hear about the lives of others and the reasons for their choices. There will be some who will not be able to have a civil conversation and you can walk away from those, but do persist and find people you can talk with – and listen.

Be sure to support your teachers union. These tireless angels are working hard and need reform in school budgets and oversight. A very important place to start is ensuring the needs of our teachers and schools. Get in touch with the Parent Teacher Organizations, find out about the union, be active and vocal if only a supportive note or donation.

Tell me what you find out.
